Property liens, process and procedure

Is court action necessary to be granted a lien on a private home? if a home owner wishes to challenge the validity of a a prospective lien on his home and the manner in which it is being sought, can he { or she } be present at the court hearing and do so then, before the lien is actually granted? can it be done by self , if affordable legal representation is not available? THANK YOU
