What is the Length of time before you can not file a suit against a medical malpractice?

If it has been 6yrs since an operation and you just found out that the reason you've had problems for the last 6yrs is because a doctor made an error, can you still file a suite against them or the Hospital?
A relative (brother) suing a hospital for negligence rather than a son.
