Will paying on unsecured debt make me inelligible to file for bankruptcy?

I have an initial payment set up of a small amount to get the debt collectors to stop calling me, but I am also looking to file for bankruptcy. Someone told me that making any payments whatsoever could make my filing for bankruptcy automatically denied. Is this true?

I filed Ch 7 bankruptcy in 2010 without a lawyer and it was discharged. On the bankruptcy I filed a checking account that was overdrawn do to nsf fees. Would filing this account also cover an outstanding check that was returned on the account? I haven't been notified about the check in 3 years.
